Koln is situated on the banks of the Rhine River in west central Germany. It is an old city with a rich history and a lot of examples of earlier architecture that survive WWII intact. I have to admit that the city exudes a somewhat drab and industrial feeling to the casual observer, though I’m sure the gray skies and continual drizzle contributed greatly to that impression.
Koln is probably best known for Kolner Dom, an impressive stone cathedral done in the Gothic style which was one of the more interesting cathedrals that I had seen while in Europe. There is also the Museen Der Stadt Koln museum located adjacent to the Dom, which was also enjoyable. After the museum, I felt compelled to stand out front for about 25 minutes waiting for the top of the hour to approach, as across the street from the Dom is the Restaurant Alt Koln, which features an ornate and elaborate animated clock with mechanized figures that come out of the recesses and strike gongs or parade with trumpets raised across small verandahs that bracket the clock.

Koln is a beautiful city, it is much larger then Dusseldorf and the main city atraction is the cathedral which is right near the main train station, so for those who visit Koln it is easy to move around. Together with Lauro, Sarah and Ilka we were climbing the 500m stairs up to the top of the cathedral. It was fun to get up there. We visited the Christmas Market and walked around for a while. Sarah and Ilka wanted to visit the Chocolate Museum so we joined as well, it was interesting…

The city that people like to party

After the Eurotunnel terminal at Coquelles, France,  we traveled along the highways A16, A18 & A10 as we passed through Brussel (Bruxelles), Belgium; and then A3 towards Köln, Germany. I noticed that there's no maximum speed limit while we were driving on the highway in Europe. Literally, cars were flying on the highway...that was pretty scary! We made a couple of stops and beat the traffic through Brussel, we eventually arrived at downtown of Köln after 9 p.m. …
