An Authentic Cultural Experience in Vancouver, Canada Jun 15, 2011
The Klahowya Village found in Stanley Park offers a great opportunity to receive an authentic Aboriginal tourism experience. The village started on May 16th and will run till September 11th. They have two performances a day, the first at 1pm and the second at 3 pm.Performers range from locally to nationally and to even world known. For example, Alex Wells a 3 time World Hoop Champion performs, and as well as many groups who performed for the 2010 Olympics. The songs and dances shared show history and meaning. Its a great way to experience authentic aboriginal culture, right from aboriginal peoples. There is also traditional storytelling 1-2 times a day. Klahowya village has a fun miniature train called "The Spirit Catcher Train" which rides for about 15 mins and tells the tale "The Raven Stealing the Sun" (the idea of the raven stealing the sun is from an ancient story on how the raven brought the sun, moon, stars, fresh water to the world). Throughout the village there are local aboriginal artisans sharing their one of a kind work. One lady does "Birch Bark Biting", this was the first time I've ever heard or came across it, so cool! Also there were traditionally made "Bentwood Boxes", which was only made by the Coast Salish peoples(located on the west coast of British Columbia). There's a place called "Ravens Landing" where you can buy aboriginal cuisine. My favorite is the plain bannock with butter.Mmm :).

So overall I think this place is great if your looking to experience authentic aboriginal culture. The performances are wonderful and after your finished with the village you have the rest of Stanley Park to explore!
