Kitch-iti-kipi (Big Spring) Manistique Reviews
A Natural Marvel in Michigan's Upper Peninsula Sep 02, 2011
A Michigan State Park sticker (or Passport for Michigan residents) is all you need to see this gorgeous natural gem. Located in a sparsely populated section of the Upper Peninsula, Kitch-iti-kipi is one of Michigan's best kept secrets.
200 feet across and 40 feet deep, Kitch-iti-kipi's frigid 45 degree F water is the perfect home to a family of fat trout, which are easily seen, even at the greatest depths. The 10,000 gallons/minute influx of water from the fractured limestone beneath the water creates mesmerizing underwater features. Clouds of sand are in continuous motion at the bottom of the spring, and for most, this is a novel sight to behold. A large, manually powered raft with a large viewing portal allows visitors a bird's eye view of the dynamic features in this spring, without ever having to set foot in the water. Visitors of all ages are left spellbound by the activity in the crystal clear water.
Even if a phobia of deep water prevents you from boarding the sizable raft, a view from the shore makes the stop worthwhile. Depending upon the time of day and the sunlight present, the waters can vary in color from a vibrant azure to an emerald green. The conifer forest surrounding the spring is also a treasure trove for photographers, and nature-lovers alike.
Be sure to stop by the Kitch-iti-kipi gift shop for information on the history of this amazing place. You'll find yourself grateful to John I. Bellaire and the Palms Book Land Company for saving this unique feature, which previously was nothing more than a trash receptacle for the local logging industry. Restored to its natural beauty, it's nearly impossible to imagine that this site was almost destroyed.
"Kitch-iti-kipi" is the local Native American term for "Mirror of Heaven"; a very apt name indeed.
