Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands, an archipelago of islands some 10 miles off the north coast of Scotland.
Things to See : St Magnus Cathedral. Founded in 1137, this impressive red sandstone cathedral has an atmoshperic interior, dominated by red circular columns and multi-coloured textile hangings. Bishop's Palace & Earl's Palace £2. Opposite the cathedral, these red ruins are a worthwhile visit Highland Park Distillery Holm Road 01856 874619, £3. Ten minutes walk from the centre. Regular tours during the spring and summer around the distillery, including a free sample. Kirkwall has a good range of craft shops, One of Orkney's specialities. Also look out for the local Orkney Fudge Kirkwall Youth Hostel Old Scape Road 01856 872243. 10 minutes walk from the centre, the hostel buildings are showing their age (wartime prefabs), but good facilities and small rooms.

THURSDAY: DAY 28: We were up at 8am since we had an early night. I had fruit & porridge for breakfast. Our day included 2 churches, 2 palaces, another Neolithic site, beautiful scenery & wildlife on Orkney. We headed south to visit ST. MAGNUS CATHEDRAL and did our own self guided tour. The first thing in the morning was a long walk to the ferry, back to Papa Westray. Before my flight back, I've had few hours to complete my small-island exploration. The weather was wonderful! Blue sky with some small cumullus'es. I went to the highest cliffs on the island. They weren't such impressive as the ones on Westray, but I saw something else. Puffins!!! My first puffins!!!
