Good spot out of the city centre mayhem Jan 01, 2014
Once again, cost depends on what you do while there. We caught a bus from Leeds which took no more than half an hour. The ruins themselves are free, but you have to go through a shop to get to them. Across the road is the museum with another shop, but we didn't go in as we were looking for "free days out". If cost isn't an issue then the museum maybe good - but if you don't want to spend anything, definitely do the abbey ruins (although the cobbles may make it difficult for those with limited mobility). Plenty of space to sit with a picnic.

Unexpected delight in Leeds Jul 24, 2010
So you are going along a major road in one of England's seven biggest cities. What do you expect to see? Houses, offices, shops? yes. A public park? perhaps. A park with the remains of a perfect Cistercian Abbey? NO - but you will!

As everybody in England knows, Henry VIII was not enamoured of monasteries - and they were very wealthy. So tear them down and get their money was the obvious answer. I doubt that creating interesting and scenic sights for us nearly six hundred years later played any part in his calculations.

Kirkstall is not only scenic - it is very informative as well, as can be seen from the website
