Kion Dining Lounge New York Reviews
A Peruvian-Japanese Fusion Cuisine and yummy dessert! Feb 20, 2009
[as of 2010, this restaurant is closed T_T]
Kion is a Peruvian-Japanese dining lounge located in NYC's Alphabet city in the East Village.
A bar with modern Latin/Japanese design welcomes you when you enter. The dining area is spacious, yet intimate, brought on by the LED lighting design incorporated with natural elements, but enhanced with upbeat music, expertly chosen by a live DJ.
A large space is available on the lower level of this bi-level restaurant with a private, Japanese-style tatami mat dining room, communal tables for large groups, and raw sushi bar for those private events and parties.
They offer a variety of Japanese and Peruvian fusion dishes of sashimi/nigiri, sushi rolls, and cevicheria, to salads, soups, tapas, and entrees.
I recommend the ceviche tasting, a variety of 7 different ceviche on the menu that is a perfect blend of the Latin/Spanish raw-style appetizer and Japanese love of raw fish/seasood, for $35. 'Chupe', a creamy panca-oregano broth of shrimp bisque with corn, edamame and egg, is delicious. Your Spanish experience will not be complete if you don't try a tapa. Try the tapa dish 'Entrana', a must not-miss very tender, grilled Argentinean skirt steak with chimichurri sauce.
The entrees are portioned largely. I recommend the Argentinian rib eye steak with sauteed asparagus and sweet potato gratin, or the salmon, grilled golden and served with shitake mushrooms, pearl onions and lobster shrimp mashed potatoes.
But last and not the least, finish off your meal with the dessert sampler for $12 (not found on the menu, but ask for it). A combination of 5 different desserts found on the menu that is perfect for at least a group of 4 people. My favorite would be the 2 flavored ice cream topped with coconut shavings, the oh so deliciously heaven chocolate brownies with hot fudge cream, and the pot sticker stuffed with ice cream and oozes with hot fudge.
