So this is a chain of complexes where, according their marketing, the goal is to “merge genuine food, creative cocktails, and social gaming to create the ultimate entertainment experience.” The Raleigh location struck me as a plush bowling alley, since I grew up when these venues always had pool tables and a bar in them. However, I do commend management’s commitment to the concept, because it eventually dawned on me there were no options for isolated activity – plenty of foosball and air hockey tables, but an absence of video games and the like where you can play solo.

Brownie points are also awarded for the décor, which was well above your customary bowling alley. There were a lot of nifty renderings of icons bowling and a strong “Big Lebowski” motif (a cult movie where bowling is a featured element). Several bars were spread across the vast interior and each was nicely appointed.

At the end of the day King’s Bowl is probably a good choice for hosting a party, not so much for a casual family outing. We were confronted with a confusing array of a la carte and package options and after expressing we wanted to bowl, got talked into buying wrist bands which pretty much permitted us to do anything (my ex and I split the tab for all and they were expedient at accepting two credit cards). This decision was motivated by being informed it would be a fifteen-to-twenty minute wait for an available lane, so they gave us a beeper and a rack of pool balls so I could kick the boys butts (I taught them how to play poker, but never pool).

We could see plenty of lanes unoccupied, but the buzzer never sounded and we left about an hour-and-a-half later. Perhaps they had been reserved for parties later on, but the disconnect between what had been advised and reality was a bit annoying. On the bright side, Spencer ordered her first legal drink at one of the hoity-toity bars, though I missed the event being engaged at a pool table.

If there is a King’s Bowl in your neighborhood I can confirm they are very nice facilities, just make sure there is plenty in your wallet.
