A castle at the mouth of the Shannon Jan 01, 2011
King John's Castle is unlike most other Irish castles because it's at the mouth of a river which was its functional place to be built.

The Vikings built it in 922; after that the site was re-used by the Anglo-Normans with King John who rebuilt a castle on that spot in 1200.

If you are interested in Viking and Norman history in Ireland, a visit to the castle is recommended. Also of you would just like a look onto the Shannon the way the early invaders did, a visit is also recommended.

Typical tourist castle Dec 22, 2009
After living in Limerick for a semester we finally made it over to King John's castle. Not worth it. We even went during a festival and it wasn't really all that exciting. If you can't make it to any other castle I guess I'd go to this one. But there are much more interesting castles to go to in Ireland.
