King & Grove Tides Miami Beach Reviews
OK May 19, 2011
The Tides was a good experience overall but clearly riding on it's beach front location as the main reason to stay there.
There was something about the hotel that just didn't get going - nothing wrong, but you had to work hard to get the most out of your stay. We had much higher expectations given the price and it's TA ratings.
The very good things - location is central on Ocean Drive so no problems there and just minutes away from the beach. The hotel has a beach hut and provides complimentary loungers and towels etc which was great, really good.
Our room was on the 8th floor and our view was excellent spanning South Beach - quite inspiring but no balcony and you could just about open the windows for air etc. The room was ok, but certainly nothing special and actually lacked some basics that you expect from a $430 per night charge - a little bit of luxury in the towel and tolietries department which were not there.
If the housekeeper came when you were there, you had a note put under the door to say they had missed you (or respected our privacy etc). If you wanted the rooms serviced, you had to take the note down to reception - not really a quality experience.
Really poor aspects were the gym and pool area - not good at all. The gym was tiny with 20 year old equipment and low ceilings so it wasn't a pleasure. No towels in the gym, no music, just a water fountain.
The pool area I could not believe. The pool was simply dirty - insects and bugs floating in the pool and the pool area was all round lacking in cleanliness. There was virtually no pool service for drinks etc - you had to call your assistant if you wanted service.
The restaurant was ok - but only ever 20% full so this was clearly a mark of what people felt. We ate there on our first night simply because we were tired and we shared the restaurant with one other couple and ended up whispering to each other! The waiting staff were very friendly however.
The final gripe was the price of coctails and drinks - an average of about $18 each which is just overpriced for an average location.
This hotel has the history and certainly the potential. It is "ok". However, it needs staff that look up and get involved with serving their guests beyond a standard "hi and hello, and welcome", it needs a really good clean top to bottom, especially the outside bar area and POOL (!!), and it needs to modernise it's gym facilities which were pathetic.
The photo of the cocktail bar by the way is completely misleading. We had seen the picture of the red room/bar on the website and it looked cool. When we got there, it was the smallest bar I had ever seen - the wide angle lens must have been expensive!
I would not return to this hotel until it overhauls its general operation.
