Unmissable sight when in Kilkenny Jan 25, 2017
I took a day trip to Kilkenny by train from Dublin in 2010. I had a great day exploring the town and the highlight was a visit to Kilkenny Castle.

Although built in 1195 by the first Earl of Pembroke, the Kilkenny Castle experience is dominated by the influence of the Butler family. The Butlers of Ormonde bought the castle in the late fourteenth century. They governed over the area around Kilkenny for 5 centuries and members of the family lived there up until 1935.

The portrait gallery is a beautiful room on the upper floor featuring portraits of the Butler family through the ages. A great view of the grounds can also be seen from the upper floor of the castle. The extensive surrounding parkland is ideal for walking off one too many pints of Guinness or Smithwick's. Check the website for opening hours as they differ depending on what time of year you visit. Entry is 8 Euro and you can expect to spend about 1-2 hours there (or more if the fire alarm goes off like it did when I was there!)

Well worth visiting Jun 03, 2011
Kilkenny Castle was impressive! Originally one tower built of wood in 1172 by Richard "Strongbow" de Clare, an Anglo-Norman conqueror of Ireland, and 20 years later the castle was built of stone. The powerful Butler family bought the castle in the 14th century and reigned it for almost 6 centuries. Finally, after letting the castle fall into ruins, the Butlers auctioned most of the furniture and sold the castle in 1967 to the city for 50 pounds.

Nowadays the castle is restored to display the glory of 17th and 18th centuries and I must say they have done a good job! There is also a wide exhibition of portraits of the Butlers inside the castle - even though the tags under the paintings might not be among the most informative ones. "This is probably a portrait of Lady Margaret Butler, the paternal grandmother of Anne Boleyn" etc…
