KiKu Japanese Steakhouse Naperville Reviews
Kiku...Fantastic Hibatchi Show and Even Better Sushi Mar 23, 2008
Kiku(to hear)hear this...should stand for hard to find but worth the trip. This is a suburban Chicago "diamond in the the rough"(that is as in rough to find in a strip mall anchored by a Menards Hardware superstore). Once you find the front door and walk through into what seems to be another world. The furnishings are so well thought out you are immediately transported to a dark Teak wood Japanese world of carvings and stylish decor. Ultra dark browns and deep reds with frosted glass and extra long draperies separate the area of the hibachi grills from the sushi areas and the bar. Each area can be very intimate or conducive to group gatherings. http://www.mykiku.com/home.htm
They have just expanded into the unit next door and doubled in size...no doubt to handle the extremely large crowds that now gather on the weekends in the very ecclectic downtown Naperville location. Recently I took a friend there on a Friday night at 5:30 pm without reservations and felt I was early enough to beat the rush but not to MY suprise the first available table was at 8:30 pm. We were forced to take in the local tapas restaurant down the street located in an 1800's Victorian style mansion...another great spot that will be reviewed at a later date.
The food is absolutely the finest quality and prepared by artists that moonlight as chefs! :)
The hibachi chefs are extremely entertaining and do a tremendous job of preparing your meal in just minutes before your eyes with tastings as you go just to make sure your meal is served at the precise moment that it is to your liking. They are personable and draw the diner into the show when they see the opportunity. This is a great spot to meet friends and gather around the grill with wonderful drinks, superb wines and sake and the finest cuisine all prepared in front of you with the show drawing you in or leaving you be if that is what you desire. We had the Filet Mignon and Lobster with the Egg Sauce and it was mouth watering.
The sushi is the finest that I have ever had and is prepared by the top flight sushi chefs with as much detail to design as to delectibility. We had numerous types of maki/sushi like the Kiku Rainbow(Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna, Rainbow Tobiko and Avocado), The Godzilla Maki(a Kiku speciality)and the "Passion Roll"(Kani, Lettuce, Kaiware, Cucumber, Asparagus, Tobiko and special sauce)....to die for really!
The service is really very good but may, at times, suffer from the popularity it has enjoyed. It does not make the evening unenjoyable but can become a concern at times, but it is obvious that everyone is trying their best to make your evening unforgetable. We had a group of ten college friends in a private dinning room and other than a few drinks that had to be ordered twice...it was a really nice evening in an unforgetable room.
Best way to find this gem is to find Interstate I-88 and take it west to the Route 59 exit, go south the the Fox Valley Mall corner of New York Ave and go east. You can't miss the Mendards on the south side of the street and if you find that you can't miss Kiku. You must have reservations unless you are eating at 4:00 pm on a Tuesday...so plan accordingly. Go to the website and you will get an idea of that which I have described above. I really hope you have a great time and enjoy this exceptional dining experience. No I don't have stock in Kiku and I am not related to the owner...I just like to share great experiences with my friends. Bon Apetite!
