Khaolak Sunset Resort Takua Pa Reviews
Nice quiet beach resort Jan 09, 2011
The resort is located at the southern edge of town about 1 km before the town center when coming from Phuket Airport. I tried to get the resort to arrange a pick-up, but they never responded to my request, so I ended up paying 2000 Baht to get from the airport to the resort. The trip back was only 1000 Baht. The front desk wasn’t particularly helpful in helping me make arrangements to go back, so I arranged it myself with email@example.com (they have a stand at the Ruen Mai Restaurant in town). I recommend arranging by email with a local taxi service to pick you up from the airport in advance.
Other than the front desk, the staff was helpful and friendly, but sometimes so soft spoken they were difficult to understand. They all could speak English well enough for customer service and some could converse reasonably well in English. A few also spoke German as they are the largest customer segment for resorts in Khao Lak.
The rooms were clean functional, although a bit out dated. I was in the oldest of the buildings, so the others ones may be more up to date. The television got 2 German channels, 2 English (BBC and movie channel), and 4 Thai channels. My room had a very large porch with very good ocean/beach views. The rooms have a safe which you program the combination for upon arrival. The WiFi Internet connection was expensive and slow, 350 Baht for 5 hours. Other internet plans were also available. My reservation was for a single queen size bed, but I ended up with in a room with two single beds. At least the beds were comfortable. The porch had two chairs and a small table and there was sufficient light to read by in the evening. Outlets in the room were good for non-grounded American plugs or European. The shower had poor water pressure for the cold water, so I could not turn up the hot water without getting scalded. The maid service cleaned the room well everyday considering how much beach sand I dragged in. They also provided new towels (including beach towels) every day.
The resort in at the southern end of the main beach in Khao Lak, so it is less busy than in front of other resorts. There are not enough beach chairs and umbrellas. To ensure you get one, put your towel on a beach chair when you go to breakfast even if you are not going to the beach right away. It seemed that every day, someone got stung by a jelly fish, although I spent a lot of time in the water and did not get stung. Can’t blame that on the resort.
The restaurant is situated at the edge of the beach. Breakfast buffet good providing a wide variety of choices from breads, cereals, fruits, cheeses, deli meats, yogurt, rice/noodles, fritters/pancakes/French toast, bacon and a couple of other things. They have an egg stand that will prepare eggs anyway you like them included as part of the buffet. The restaurant was just OK for lunch and dinner and somewhat expensive compared to restaurants in town for what you get.
Overall, it’s about what I expected for a three star resort (Expedia rating) so I was satisfied.
