Key West, FL during Festival Reviews
Festival is similar to Madri Gras I would imagine May 23, 2010
This was in mid-October 2009. I've never been to Madri Gras, only seen stuff on TV. Based on that I think there are some similarities to be drawn.
hat a hoot!
It was about 5 hour trip by tour bus from Ft Lauderdale to arrive at Key West. Got there about 2pm. Turns out it was festival week, kind of like Mardi Gras. So I saw some unexpected sights. First was a lean, tan man pedaling his bike wearing a thong with a pussy cat tail. Guess that was his "costume". The bus stopped at the buoy that marks the southernmost point in continental USA and is 90 miles from Cuba. I saw the Hemingway House. The guided tour is worth it, but expect them to ask for a tip at the end. I'd not run into that situation before, pay to get in and then a tip is wanted at the end by the guide. Saw the lighthouse, do not know if it was open for climbing. Went to the Giraffe for best Key Lime Pie (and I'm not a fan of Key Lime pie). Went to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville restaurant and had the delicious cheeseburger in paradise. After leaving there I saw more unexpected sights. Still just a Thursday and broad daylight and a pair of painted naked breasts walked past me. In the restaurant there had been a couple women with pasties. A few minutes later an entirely nude woman painted white sauntered past me. I can't even imagine how wild the place must be after dark and on a weekend. Now the sunset is great, if you go I hope you get to see it. There is a plaza on the water that has stunt men and acrobatic type shows - no charge - but really no seats either. Hard on the legs after walking about for hours. I would have liked to taken a boat ride to the Tortuga's but there wasn't any time. This is definitely not a place to take children. Arrived back in Ft Lauderdale about midnight. I had expected I might need to tip the driver, but the "narrator" made it clear he was also expecting a tip. So pay for the bus tour and tip and tip again, just be prepared.
