Keswick Museum and Art Gallery Reviews
A charming little museum Sep 18, 2010
Keswick Museum & Art Gallery was founded in 1873. The museum has been in different locations, but the house where it is today was opened in 1898. It was run by the Fitz Park Trust until 1994. Today it is run by a company made up of local people, who now run the museum on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council.
Keswick Museum & Art Gallery is a small, but charming museums. It´s highlights are the Skiddaw´s Famous Musical Stones, Lake Poets Manuscripts, a 668 year old cat, a cabinet of curiosities and monthly exhibitions.
The museum offers a nice introduction to Keswicks history, the market town, the slate mines and the graphite pencils industry. The Art Gallery has a nice presentation of the Lake Poets.
In the first room you can play the Musical Stones of Skiddaw., pet stuffed animals and check out the 668 year old cat. The second room has the Flintoft´s Model of the Lake District as well as a large collection of stuffed birds. The Art Gallery also has collections of British moths, British beetles and Indian butterflies.
Keswick Museum offer a value for money visit whatever the weather, whatever your age or interest. The three galleries covers a mix of local history, archaeology, geology (Keswick was rich on lead), natural history, art and a special collection of literary manuscripts of the Lakes poets and writers.
Keswick Museum & Art Gallery is a small museum which does not take long to visit. If you are in Keswick I can recommend a stop at this museum.
