Keshem Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys that I have ever visited. It is located in the heart of the Hindu Kush mountains in the far northeast corner of the country about a day and a half drive from Kabul. Due to efforts by the Norwegian Committee for Afghanistan, much of the valley has been reforested, and the valley floor and mountain sides are green with vegetation. A glacier-fed rushing river cuts through the narrow valley, and small villages dot the landscape. This is a perfect area for trekking, although it is impossible to pull off without local contacts. With a local guide, is possible to trek through the friendly villages all the way to the upper valleys where summer snows are not uncommon and snow-capped mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the herds of animals feasting on the green fields. This is one of the few places that has significant wildlife in Afghanistan, thanks to the protection by the local leader, the Khan of Keshem. It is also one of the few areas of the country that are not littered with landmines, and so allow for the trekker to wander through the pastures with no fear of mines (at least not of the explosive kind).

Keshem Valley is undoubtedly one of the hidden jewels of Afghanistan. The area is desperately poor, but with the ecological consciousness of the local population (they take great pride in preserving nature), and the amazing scenery, this place has the potential of developing around tourism and trekking. Yikes, you take travel adventure to the extreme. I know a number of people working in Kaboul at the moment. None has ventured out and they're a pretty game lot. I'll show them this review!
