Elfin Oak Feb 27, 2017
Near the Diana Playground, there is what looks like an old fashiond zoo animal cage. It contains something that attracts many people to go up close to it to examine it.

The cage contains a dead tree, the stump of an (apparently) 900 year old oak tree. But, why is it in a cage?

Go close to it, and you will see something that is both kitch and enchanting. The folds, nooks, and crannies of the tree are filled with tiny carved figures. These figures depict insects, birds, animals, and people.

The figures were carved from 1911 onwards by the illustrator Ivor Innes.

In recent years, the commedian Spike Milligan financed the restoration of this curious attraction.

Suitable for visitors of all ages!

I was disappointed to see Elfin locked behind the fence. The net makes spotting those little figurines very hard, and taking photos is not possible. I understand it is to protect the tree, but the net could have bigger "eyes" Or "holes" (dunno how you call it in English).

Just outside the much visited recently re-vamped Kensington Palace, once home to the late lamented Princess Diana, there stands a sculpture of a very young looking Queen Victoria.

The statues stands outside the building in which Victoria was born. Kensington Palace was not only the birthplace of Queen Victoria, but it was also once the residence of Princess Louise (1848-1939) who sculpted the statue. Incidentally, Louise died in the palace where her mother Queen Victoria was born.

There's a show on PBS (Public Broadcasting) about Victoria, and I saw a piece of it yesterday the part where the old king died and she became queen - apparently they decided that Victoria wasn't an appropriate name and wanted to change her name to Elizabeth. I think it is nice to have some things showing when she wasn't old and dumpy.

I loved Kensington Gardens...but that's because I love J.M. Barrie and Peter Pan. I went to it as the first thing I did in London...and it was fantastic...there it was...the little bronze statue of Peter with his mermaids. *sigh* Anyway...the park is a really nice place to's got Italian fountains/pool (not one you swim in). A little art gallery, a monument to Albert. I really liked the pond over by Kensington Palace where there were lots of ducks, geese and SWANS! There were also some really cool model ship makers racing their models on the water. I didn't go up to Hyde Park, which is attached to Kensington...but if you have a few days in should really check it out and wind down (plus it's right by all the museums and Harrods!)
