Brighton's best breakfast? Mar 22, 2012
Located on the corner of Kensington Street in the busiest part of the North Laine area of Brighton, one could be forgiven for walking past this place countless times without venturing in. It is next to/above an independent bag shop on one side and a designer jewellery shop on the other. The entrance is a door leading to the cafe which is located upstairs and from outside you can just about see the sign or if you've been looking upwards may be able to see people dining on the balcony overlooking the lanes.

The menu is very impressive with a wide variety of food choices. You can get jacket potatoes with lots of different fillings, baguettes and sandwiches also with many fillings to choose, some simple Mexican dishes but the main reason to come here is for the outstanding fried breakfasts. This is what the Kensington cafe is famous for and it never disappoints.

The portions are huge and the quality of the food is good and considering the price and location you'll know you've stumbled onto a winner here. You can add a variety of extras (e.g. mushrooms, black pudding, more bacon etc) to the breakfast and there are full veggie options available for those that don't enjoy meat. You'll have to queue at the counter to place your order and grab cutlery and a free table.

Unsurprisingly the Kensington cafe is very popular. At weekends the queue to get served can get quite long and as there is one person at the counter it can take a very long time to finally get an order. If you're with friends it's best to have someone scout and grab a table whilst the rest order, to avoid getting the food only to be found without a table. The long wait times when busy are the only reason I don't rate the Kensington a full 5 stars. That being said if you are lucky or get there early enough on a sunny weekend and manage to grab one of the balcony tables overlooking the steet below it is a great place to people watch in the sunshine while you enjoy your food.

There are plenty of places to choose from in Brighton to enjoy a full english breakfast but very few that can match the quality and cost of the dinning at the Kensington cafe. With the central location it's easy to go about any plans you have in town as soon as you've finished dinning. I highly recommend this to anyone after an affordable breakfast in central Brighton provided you're not in a rush.
