Kelowna Winery Tours Sep 09, 2008
Most tours are every hour, and go until 4pm at most wineries. There are a lot more wineries in the area, but these are the only ones I managed to check out.
Mission Hill Estates
INCREDIBLE landscape and gorgeous architecture. Driving through the Jurassic-Park-esque gates, opens to the estates, which I could compare to a Mediterranean villa for royalty. They offer several tours, starting at $8, increasing in price depending on focus and how thorough the tour is. Complimentary tasting of several wines with tour, or $5 for a taste of 3 wines. I recommend tasting the Oculus (normally $5 for taste, unless you flirt the server into including it with the 3 for $5;)) The Oculus is a very complex varietal, no two sips alike in tastes. Walking around the complex was incredible, overlooking Lake Okanagan. A must see in my mind, but tours can run you some change, so I didn't take one.
A smaller, more cozy winery in my mind. Has out of estate and provincial grape sources, so don't think the small vineyard is sufficient for the output these guys pump out. FREE tours, with complimentary tasting after tour. Tours include mainly the facility, not much in the vineyard area itself. FREE tasting can also be done at the "tasting bar" at your leisure!
Several "companies" amalgamated into this building, HQ-style. A lot of grapes imported to processing, so no vineyards to see. This building is within an Industrial area of Kelowna's DT. Many various wines to taste (at a FEE of 3 tastes for $5), including Peller Estates, Sandhill, etc..
No tours per se, expect more of a store-front/tasting experience than anything else. Luckily, next door is Tree Hill brewery who offer FREE tours only on FRIDAYS, but FREE tasting all week. Decent brews.
Probably my most memorable and 'best' winery experience in Kelowna. FREE tours every hour. This tour was by far the most comprehensive and enjoyable of all places, that leaves each person with a greater knowledge of grapes, wine-making and the business of wine. Great scenery at the vineyards, over the Lake Okanagan. David the tour guide was very enthusiastic and I recommend requesting this man as your guide. FREE tasting following the tour. Extra tasting at the tasting bar for a fee (3 for $5). For $2.50 your can try out Optima in a Chocolate shot glass (that you can eat!) The Optima is a sweet wine made from fungal-affected foot-stomped grapes. But which came first, the fungus or the feet, I'm not sure!;) For $3.50, try out their ice-wine in same chocolate cup...
FREE tours, at a certified Organic winery. Yes, no chemical pesiticides fertilizers used here. Tours include the signature pyramid where the wine is aged. Gorgeous views over the Lake, especially from the balcony restaurant (EXCELLENT food, but a tad pricey). FREE tasting after tours, as well as upon request at tasting bar. Incredible scenery at this one - smaller vineyard, but includes their own orchard where food used in the restaurant is grown/harvested.
