The amazing Lake with three colours May 03, 2009
To reach Mount Kelimutu that last had erupted in 1886, is to be a "struggle" all of its own. From the town of Maumere, Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, it took about 6 or 7 hours by bus, because the road conditions are not very good, it meanders across ravines and cliffs. The bus stopped at Moni village closest to Mount Kelimutu crater. In Moni village I had to spend the night before an early morning wake up at 4 am to get to the lake of three colours, and to be there in good time to watch the sunrise.

Moni village is part of Koanara Village a Sub-Disrtict in the Ende District and is 13 miles from Lake Kelimutu. a 45 minutes drive away. Then a walk of about 30 minutes will get you to the Three colour lake on top of the crater of Mount Kelimutu, which is a wonder of the world, it’s really charming with beauty and mystery that are stored on top of this mountain at a high of about 1700 meters above sea level.

There are three lakes in the crator at the top of Mount Kelimute which to be one is called Lake Kelimute in Flores, NTT. This is the second time I have visited the lake. Dark green, blue and turquoise blue, are the three colours of Lake Kelimutu. This uniqueness is an attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. The spectacle of the lake’s three beautiful colours, splendid natural scenery and because of the three colours that always seem to change over time, then this will make you love this idyllic place. For local people the changes in colours have their own special meanings. The Names of the three lakes are Lake Tiwu Ata Mbupu, “which is where the souls of their parents are kept”, Ata Polo Tiwu lake, “which is occupied by the souls of the wicked” and Lake Tiwu Nuamuri Koofai, “a gathering place for the spirits of young children”. This third lake is believed to be the abode of the spirits and sacred by the local people.

Many local residents who believe the sanctity and spirit of lehuru (ancestors), here in the lake is where their souls will dwell and the discoloration will have a major impact on the upcoming forecasts with their beliefs.

Although known as a place of the aboded spirits, the beauty of Lake Kelimutu not to be refuted, especially if you are visiting in the morning before the sunrise. Here when the golden light is combined with the three quiet lakes is so charming.

The charm of Lake Kelimutu is truly captivating in natural beauty. However, it takes a hard struggle to be able to enjoy its beauty this EARLY in the morning, as I was awakened by the driver who would drive me to Lake Kelimutu and this with other tourists inside the car who also want to head to the lake, this makes me shy with my untidiness...lol

You must be prepared physically for a 3 kilometers walk and 236 stairs to reach the summit of Kelimutu. Along the way, there are a lot of animals and pine forest that you will pass. The air is so cold when we reach and tread on the top lip of the craters edge over looking lake kelimutu. It’s still deliberately early in the morning as to seek the sunrise behind the top of kelimutu...unfortunately, it turns out I did not get the sunrise because of thick fog this morning, but that disappointment can be overcome to see the beautiful scenery around the Kelimutu.

After the physical draining of the walk and climb, the beauty of Lake Kelimutu helps in making you forget those aches and pains and with the three different beautiful colours release by the waters which are dark green, blue and turquoise blue and also with the reflections of cloud and blue skies makes views of the three lakes just perfect a scene. This volcanic made lake is considered magical and mysterious with its changing colours, which is something I have witnessed for myself, because when first came in 2004, these lakes are coloured red, turquoise green and blue. This is due to the factors of the mineral content, moss and rocks in the crater and also the influence of the sun's light.

So, prepare your camera and shoot every detail of the lake. If lucky, you can see the colours change. For the travelers, it is worth mentioning this is one of the best sights in the world.
