Kehena Beach Reviews
Clothing-optional Kehena Beach Feb 16, 2009
This black sand treasure is a perfect paradise beach. Off the beaten tourist path, this is not really somewhere that you can stop on the way to anywhere else, unless you are on your way to Pohoiki, Ahalanui warm ponds, or the Kapoho Tidepools. Another more specific list for Puna is in order.
The trail to the beach is a bit precarious, however, folks of all ages make it down the rock-carved path to enjoy the beach under the dramatic cliff and coconut palms. Dolphins frequent the bay in the mornings.
Although Kehena is known as a clothing optional beach, many people wear clothing and swimwear, but be forewarned that many do not. Kehena is very popular on Sundays for the drum circle, but other days of the week it is very peaceful. No matter what day you go, there are probably a few colourful characters hanging out there. Lock your car and DO NOT leave valuables in it. I've never had problems here, but I don't drive a rental car.
There is no restroom facility--most folks just walk into the brush at the opposite end of the beach from the trail, or pee in the ocean.
The shorebreak can be unforgiving at this beach. If you decide to swim, watch what the locals do, watch the sets, and stay mindful of the current.
