Chicken, Biscuits and Flying Saucers or A Rainy Day in Kecksburg Mar 17, 2010
Looking for something to do on a rainy weekend so we paged down through the bucket list, to somewhere in the low seven hundreds, and decided it was time to see the statue at the Kecksburg Fire Hall.
On December 9,1965 a brilliant fireball was seen streaking over Michigan, Ontario and Ohio and reported to have crashed through the trees, coming to rest in the woods thirty miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Local residents reported finding an object the size of a Volkswagon Beetle in the shape of an acorn.
The item was quickly removed by the United States Army who intimidated witnesses into silence.
A UFO research group, The Coalition for Freedom of Information sued NASA in 2003 seeking information on the Kecksburg incident. NASA settled the suit in October 2007 when they agreed to pay $50,000 in legal fees and search its records. In 2005 NASA spokesman David Steitz reported to the Associated Press that experts had examined fragments from the object, but the records of what they found were lost in the 1990s.
Kecksburg residents erected a replica of the object behind the volunteer firehall.
There is not a whole lot to see in Kecksburg but fortunately, on the Sunday morning of my visit the KFD was hosting a tasty chicken and biscuits dinner at the fire hall.
