Kawaguchiko Overview

Being just a 2 hour (give or take) bus ride from Tokyo, Fuji-Kawaguchiko-machi or Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi), is a town around the eponymous lake at the base of the iconic Fujisan (Mt. Fuji). It is popular as one of the best known areas to view Mt. Fuji unobstructed. Lake Kawaguchi is one of the famous 5 lakes of Mt. Fuji and part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. There is also train access as well as a busy amusement park nearby, (Fujikyu Highland).

No longer on the main climber's map as most Fuji hikers start at a higher elevation, this is a nice town to relax away from it all that is easily accessible from Tokyo's hustle and bustle. On a non holiday weekday you may feel like the only tourist there as many opt for the more romantically popular Hakone. But Kawaguchi town has several local hot spings (onsen) nearby as well as local bathhouses and a few cute little museums and some local temples and shrines to peruse. Small shops selling the ubiquitous tourist souvenirs abound, but delicious sweets and Japanese snacks can help your day drift away in this quaint village. Not to missed..the Kachi Kachi ropeway (cable car) that takes you to an elevation of Mt. Kachi Kachi. Here you have fantastic views of the lake and Fujisan.
