Kauppatori (Market Square & Market Hall) Helsinki Reviews
year round market Jul 05, 2010
The Kauppatori (or Market Square) is one of my favorite places in Helsinki. Year round this place is bustling with activity and you will find stalls with souvenir vendors but also a few places to have a cup of cofee, enjoy a hot dog or try other traditional Finnish food. In the Summer you can also find a great sellection of berries.
The Market Square is located very close to the centre of Helsinki, at the eastern end of the Esplanadi, bordering the Baltic Sea to the south and Katajanokka with the beautiful Uspensky cathedral to the east. Don't forget to take in the beautiful view on both the Lutheran and Ortodox cathedral, the presidential palace, the Baltic Sea and the Market Hall.
The Market hall (Kauppahalli), to the right hand side of the square (coming from Esplanadi) dates back from the time of the Czars. It is a cosy place with small wooden booths inside where vendors are selling typical Finnish foods such as reindeer and salmon but also tins of bear meat! The Market Hall hosts also café; nice to pause with a cup of coffee on a glacial winter day.
There is a a year-round ferry link from the Market Square to Suomenlinna, the fortress island just off the coast and in Summer there are also private boat providing cruises to Suomenlinna or around the nearby islands.
