Fair value, great location, and a nice retreat after weeks of trekking. Oct 01, 2010
Been staying there for a total of six days during my Nepal-trip 2010. This is actually a Hotel, and not really what you would expect when you read "Guest House". But depending on availability, the room prices are really good.

Granted, you can find much cheaper places to stay in Thamel, but I paid around 15$ for a clean, spacious private room, which I don't think is too much. The building has a nice garden area, and one of the coolest features is the rooftop. Just go all the way up until you're on the first roof-level, take the metal steps to the very top, and you have a splendid view over Thamel! Most of the times I was the only one up there, so it seems like it's not widely-known that you are able to go up there. Grab a beer and let the day end with style :-)

There's an internet cafe and a restaurant as well, and while I was using the Internetcafe because it was simply convenient, I only ate once in the restaurant. A little expensive, compared to what you get when take a walk to one of the countless small restaurants in Thamel.

Be aware though, that pre-booking is highly recommended. Especially during the high season the Hotel is stuffed with guests, and you can consider yourself lucky to get a room by just showing up on the same day!

Overall: A great place to stay if you want to have a little comfort for not-too-high prices.

Nice place to stay but amneties can be expensive Apr 23, 2009
Coming from India this place was nice and relaxing. We stayed at the cheapest room possible with a clean shared bathroom. However we were awaken about every morning to some guy hacking and coughing for hours. Also there is music playing till about midnight from the local bar. It has many amenities; food, internet, laundry. These are all very expensive though and we ended up going to other places.

Kathmandu Guest House Apr 29, 2009
Kathmandu Guesthouse in the central Thamel area of Kathmandu is one of the iconic locations to stay in Nepal. It is right in the center of the action in Thamel, but is located far enough back off the road that you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the touts and shops on the streets.

The guesthouse has a wide variety of options to stay. The cheaper rooms offer preety much a bed, table and shared bathrooms. A step up might add an ensuite bath, a fan and TV (that will only work occasionally when the power is working). Finally you could go up to what is almost a standard hotel room. Rates go from about $2 for a single basic room to $60 or more for a deluxe room. One other thing to remember about the price is that there is a 10% service charge and 13% VAT tax on all rates (including restaurant bills).

Some rooms in the front of the building are quite close to a bar and can be quite noisy until things slow down around 11:00 PM.

The KGH offers many additional features on site. Several restaurants offer decent fare (although one thing to realize that for most restaurants in Thamel, the food is somewhat pricey). There is a barber/salon for getting a haircut. An internet connection is available although I would recommend using an internet cafe in town for better connections. A gift store is available. Most importantly for trekkers is an excellent left luggage system for leaving valuables that you don't need when going out on your extended treks. There is also the spacious courtyard to spend time in once you are tired of the craziness of the Kathmandu scene.

One thing KGH shares with all the other locations in Kathmandu is the frequent power outages that mark life in Kathmandu. There is backup generator power that keeps the majority of things running. In the guest rooms this included one main room light and one bathroom light. But when the power is out things like the fan, TV, or having electricity to charge batteries does not exist. But then that is the same throughout Kathmandu.

I enjoyed the time I spent here. There are some other options available, but for me this was convenient for all of my needs throughout my time in Kathmandu.
