One of the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, along with Uluru. Kata Tjuta is a series of 36 domes, rising up to 546 metres above the flat semi-arid plains of the Northern Territory.
The site is sacred to the Angura people, and many important Tjukurpa legends (also known as dreamtime legends) are based at Kata Tjuta, although they are not told to outsiders. The area is the site of important rituals in the development of Angura boys into men. From 1872 to 1993 Kata Tjuta was also known as The Olgas, named by Ernest Giles in honour of Queen Olga of Württemberg. In 1993 the original aboriginal name was recognised, resulting in a dual naming policy.

Uluru, Australia -› Kata Tjuta, Australia -› ...
In the afternoon we went to Kata Tjuta, a men's sacred site. The Angura men took boys to Kata Tjuta to teach them the skills of being a man, I'm guessing hunting, hiding emotion and talking about football, but it could be anything, because the Angura do not tell anyone about the sacred stories of the site (which is fair enough, considering the disrespect with which Uluru is still treated). We stopped at the lookout, full of flies, and looked with wonderful out over the primordial l...
