Kasbah du Toubkal Imlil Reviews
Mountain-side paradise Oct 08, 2005
The Kasbah du Toubkal, located within the Atlas mountains is a beautiful former palace for a regional Sultan. Located a short walk away from the village of Imlil (about an hour's drive from Marrakech), it offers a rare and remote luxury service. The facilities at the Kasbah are not top notch, however are certainly above average. The staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful, the whole experiance gives a decent insite into the true hospitality that can be found within Arab culture. Turkish baths are thrown in on site, as well as a good sized roof to spend time observing the world below, and passing time by painting or writing.
My experiance of the Kasbah was somewhat different to what I was expecting. I stayed in the 'Berber saloon' which is one of the many types of room avalible, this is designed for 'communal living'. My 'bed' was certainly not of the typical western design, and whereas it was raised fairly high (and was unfortunatly very narrow) it was still comfortable. I enjoyed the laidback atmosphere of the resort, the daily meals were exquisit (vegi options are avalible).
It has to be said that unless you are passing by to head further into the Atlas mountains there is not too much to see or do in Imlil, so I would suggest staying for one or two nights overall. If you can spare the cash, it is definately worth a visit for its clear skies (perfect for star watching) and breath taking views in the summer.
The two main flaws I see with this resort are the following:
1) Public bathrooms, whereas some of the 'upgraded' rooms may have ensuits, showers and toilets are shared amongst all guests.
2) For internet/phone users your not going to get signal, or much of a chance to power your devices, your going to need to think about this before you head up there.
(No pictures I'm afraid, this is due to a lost camera :()
