Camping in the Sahara Apr 10, 2009
Actually this review is not about the Kasbah Mohayut it self, but about the trip by camel into the desert which starts from here.

We didn't spend the night at the kasbah, but got a good general impression of it waiting for our transport for our night in the desert. The kasbah is one of an entire row in Merzouga lining up at the start of the Sahara sanddunes.

The kasbah has a nice swimming pool, a restaurant, somme lounge area's inside as well as outside in two gardens and a walled parking lot.

We took a few hours camel ride in the afternoon into the Sahara near Erg Chebbi to find a place to sleep in a basic tent camp. The tent was built up by some bankets and the bed existed of... some blankets. You would have wanted something else after a multi hour drive on the back of a camel!

A big tent was the restaurant where local food and tea was served. In the meanwhile we enjoyed the beautiful dark sky above the desert with loads of twinkling stars. You can say, this was a multi star hotel. Of course it was very basic, bad for the back, no proper facilities, but yet an unforgettable experience. The only thing you heard at night were the camels. Fortunately they didn't disappear and took us back out of the desert the next day.

Although we had no comfort at all, we wouldn't like to have missed this alternative way to spend the night...

Oasis on the Edge of the Dunes May 16, 2008
This beautiful and well-kept hotel is located right on the edge of the dunes of Erg Chebbi, a few km's from the paved road between Rissani & Merzouga. There is a big sign from the road, and then one drives along for about km or 2 across the black (rock) desert, on a well-worn gravel track to reach the hotel. There is ample, covered parking within the outer walls of this kasbah-style hotel.

The dunes are literally right behind the building and the views are astounding. Reception is an ecclectic mix of desert items and we were greeted by Mohamed who is the owner/manager of the hotel. My first night was spent at Mohayut's deep-desert bivouac (see my travel blog for more info on that), but I also spent a night in the hotel proper.

There is an interior courtyard lined with tables and chairs and a large garden. There is also a much larger pool area with lots of shade, trees, loungers and umbrellas, which is a welcome relief from the heat. There is a large camel-fountain that spouts water into the pool! Funny and fitting, given the surroundings. There is also a rooftop terrace with seating areas.

The room itself was a good size with a stone floor, decorated in a desert motif with a/c and adequate lighting. The bathroom was a good size with separate toilet, sink and shower areas. Lots of hot water with good pressure. Of course, being in the Sahara, there is sand everywhere and while the staff do their best to keep it at bay, it will always be a losing battle vs. Mother Nature. O well. The room also had am interior stairway that led to a 2nd floor, private terrace looking out over the dunes.

Had dinner, lunch and breakfasts here, as there's not really much else around. The food was good and the service throughout my stay was friendly and professional. Mohamed spoke excellent English. (The best dinner that I've had in Morocco was prepared at their desert camp!)

The hotel arranges desert treks in-house and these excursions leave, with a guide, every night just before the sun goes down (times vary depending on season, of course).

There is lots of choice for hotels/riads in the Merzouga area, but for the price paid and service delivered, Kasbah Mohayut certainly warrants consideration for accommodation and/or desert excursions.
