Authentic bhuddist monastic festival Sep 05, 2008
Looking for an authentic festival to attend when planning a trip to Ladakh? Karzok is a small gompa overlooking the lake about 4.5k metres up in the Himalayas. The proper road runs out a few miles before you get there - it's really quite isolated. What's so great about this place is that 9/10 of the people who attend the two day festival in August are local village people or nomads living in yakswool tents round about, for whom this is the event of the year and get dressed up accordingly; the festival is most definitely for them, not for the tourists. There are two or three tented camps for tourists, and you'll need to book them, but there are no proper phone communications to karzok so you'll have to do this well in advance through an intermediary (or take your own tent!). The festival may not be choreographed like the big touristy one at Hemis, and is quite raw in its way, but all the more charming for that. Go there before it's discovered by too many people. All very Michael Palin!
