Karuizawa is a region in Nagano prefecture. It is a famous summer resort in Japan.

The place was a 'Shukuba' town of 'Nakasendou', a post station on the trade route in Edo era. However, the history of Karuizawa as a summer resort was since 1888 when Alexander Croft Shaw, a Scottish missionary built his villa in here. Spending summer in Karuizawa became popular for foreign people lived in Japan after 1893.

The economic growth of Japan after 1960s and the short distance between Karuizawa and Tokyo made it to be a popular choice to spend summer for ordinary Japanese people. A tennis court in Karuizawa was the place where the emperor first met his queen Michiko in 1953. It is also known that John Lennon spent summer with his family in this place since 1970s.
