Karioi Lodge Backpackers and Hostel Raglan Reviews
Amazing off-season retreat Aug 04, 2010
My friend and I stayed here as our first stop on a North Island road trip. We picked up a tiny car at the Auckland airport, figured out the driving on the left thing, and set off for a couple hour drive to Raglan (although the lodge is technically outside Raglan, in Whale Bay). The multiple building lodge felt like a summer camp, but so much better.
It was fairly empty (since August is a shoulder season and the area is mostly a surfing draw), but the few other guests were fun to hang out with in the common room. The common room (next to a large and functional kitchen) has a huge communal tables, a couple computers with coin-activated internet, a big screen tv with satellite, and a billiards table along with a few other games. It also has a great wrap-around deck with a view of the ocean. Other buildings contained the bunk rooms, sauna, and a big "sports barn" with more games and what looked to be a stage (maybe for music and parties in higher season?).
A great bonus is the flying fox (casual zip-line) on the property. You can use it day and night, no limit, and stretch your confidence level! Another wonder is the view deck/amphitheater on the property, perfect for reading or daydreaming. Overall, this is a really unique hostel experience, on lots of acreage, with special features. It's a bit out of town, but the location is so amazing, it's worth the drive.
