Kari Kari Ballet Easter Island Reviews
New traditional dances of Rapa Nui Jan 17, 2012
I am usually not into "tourist entertainment", but this time it looked like preservation of the tradition and spreading the culture is much more important for this ballet group than earning money. I met few of the guys that dance there roaming the city, and I really wanted to see what they can do.
Dance is very intensive, they almost don’t stop at all, have few changes of cloth (or getting rid of the cloth) and it is a large group of people. In the background, band of string instruments sings local songs with fast Ukulele as a predominant sound. There is probably somewhere around 20 people that perform different dances from ritual to war to everyday dance…
Of course I was seated in the front row, so that guys can make faces and show how they will attack their enemies (of course in the dance moves). Performance is pretty long and enjoyable. Cost is somewhere around 20$, which is a bit expensive, but is really worth to see it. There is also another ballet group in the town, and one restaurant has some performing. Kari Kari has its own building on the edge of the town overlooking the coast when you are going towards cemetery.
