Karavanserai Hotel Sheki Reviews
Stay in an authentic Karavanserai Jun 30, 2010
There are very few times where the hotel is an experience, but the Karavanserai Hotel is a marvelous exception. The hotel is an original 18th century Karavanserai, built to host camel trains moving along the Silk Route. The building has a typical Karavanserai design, with thick stone walls acting as fortifications and a single gate into an inner courtyard (where the camel trains would have once been kept, but which is now a lovely oriental garden). The rooms are built into the outer wall, and are long and deep, with an anteroom for entertaining guests and negotiating sales, and a long back room for sleeping and storage. While the building itself is magnificent, the rooms are closer to that of a substandard backpackers, with old threadbare bedding and bathroom facilities that (to be polite) need an upgrade. Or as one of our colleagues put it more eloquently, the hotel “is all fur coat and no knickers”.
We were fortunate enough to have our stay coincide with a major two day international song festival, and the Karavanserai was chosen as the location of the Azerbaijani displays. The courtyard was full of dignitaries and filming equipment and the singers and dancers had the rooms next to us for changing. It was like staying backstage on a major folk art production, and we went to sleep listening to the singers rehearsing for the following night’s production.
