Karaoke da Mama Reviews
Karaoke da Mama- Japantown's Singing and Watering Hole Mar 16, 2009
(Brief cultural note: São Paulo is the city with the largest population of Japanese living outside of Japan. The place I'm reviewing is in Liberdade, our very own Japantown, with lots of other interesting things to see and do)
Located on Rua da Glória, one of the busiest streets in Liberdade, Karaoke da Mama, aka Chopperia Liberdade aka David Lynch's Karaoke is a uniquely kitsch and fun place to go to. I went there this Saturday with a group of friends and the place was jam packed, with people of ages but mostly in their 20s. While waiting for your moment of glory on the tiny stage you can have a few caipirinhas or sakes, enjoy the exquisitely kitsch decor or play pool in the back. Almost as famous as the place is its manager- the perfectly coiffed and neatly dressed Mama, who surveils the floor with those enigmatic eyes of hers. Song list is humongous but luckly organized in chapters: songs in Spanish, songs in Brazilian, English, Japanese, etc. Entrance fee of R$ 7, songs at R$ 2 and robatas at R$ 3 make this place quite the bargain. Great place to hang out with friends and meeting Brazilian cuties.
No screaming or whistling. Thank…
