Kane'ohe is a town on the Windward (eastern) side of O'ahu. In the Hawaiian language, Kane'ohe means "bamboo man". Kane'ohe was traditionally an agricultural area, due to the large amounts of rainfall the area receives, but is now primarily residential and commercial.
The town is surrounded by Kane'ohe Bay, Kailua town, Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base and the Ko'olau mountains. The Valley of the Temples is not to be missed.

After my last hike, I said I would have to experience the Haiku Stairs again. After all.... I forgot to charge my camera the last time and missed out on taking pictures at the summit. Once again this was an amazing hike. Fortunately it seems to get easier the more I do it. (My legs don't hurt as bad this time) The one difference is that I made a new friend on this one.Josh aka. JMSWANSON (http://www.travbuddy.com/Jmswanson) contacted me about doing the hike while he was here on his honey...

Today I hung out with Kar-Hai and his girlfriend Gina for a few hours. Kar Hai is my old friend from high school and the only person to date who has moved further West than anyone I know from NY. His girlfriend spent a couple of years in NY, but it's really her name that makes her "New York" ;) The stuff we did was a bit touristy but SO successful, and now I can strike these things off from my list of places I haven't seen in Oahu.We re-visited Giovanni's shrimp shack which was delicious as a...

Are You Sure We Are Not Trespassing?!?

Somewhere between Kualoa and Kaneohe, Mar turns off the Kamehameha Hwy and into another residential area.  Several turns later, we were parking the car on the street with a fenced off gravel and dirt road ahead.  After putting on our hiking boots we made our way to the "trailhead".  All I saw at the end of the paved road was a 6-8 foot tall chain link fence and a huge sign saying "NO TRESPASSING".  In my head I thought "Hmm...should we really be doing this?" and "I hope I ...

Valley of the Temples
posted by:
Dec 17, 2006 - Oct 01, 2007
We decided to check out the Valley of the Temples in Koneohe. This is a memorial dedicated to the first Japanese immigrants to enter Hawaii.  After almost missing the turnoff we drove through a cemetary and ended in a small parking lot. We paid the man 2 bucks and started off to see the Byodo-In Temple. There was a small bridge to cross and then it opened into a an open area ust below the mountains. The Temple sits snug in the back surrounded by a coy pond. As soon as I stepped off ...
