This small town of 10,000 or maybe less sits in the center of the southwest’s national parks and amazing geological scenery, with coral pink cliffs, sand duns, volcanic craters, lava flows, deep canyons, and majestic mountains all close by. In fact the region used to be called “Little Hollywood” because so many films were made in the surrounding area.

Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon National Parks are all nearby, with Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and Lake Powell also in close proximity.

It used to be one of the most isolated towns in the country and perhaps that isolation is why Zane Gray lived in the town while writing his Riders of the Purple Sage in 1912.

Great place to visit while in Utah, although it was a very long walk just to get to the actual canyon and back. Beware of rattle snakes and lots of dead rabbits and other small animals!

North Rim of the Grand Canyon on Friday

We only hiked 5 miles today and it was relatively level (about time!).  The first of  the 3 places we went was another slot canyon  8 miles down a single lane dirt road and then hiking down a dry wash for 2 more miles into a canyon only 2 feet wide.  This was spectacular even though we arrived a little before the sun was straight overhead.  As we left we passed several groups hiking in for the peak time.      Sec...

Back to Kanab for another evening.  Tonight we get to visit a place recommended highly by the staff at the motel.  Escobar’s Mexican restaurant had sounded good to us when we asked yesterday about good family dining in Kanab.  Unfortunately they were closed yesterday.  But tonight they are open and we get to give them a try.  As you can see from our review, it was well worth the wait.  Don’t get me wrong, the Rewind Café was excellent too.  I like to ea...

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Cottage

As an animal lover, I have been donating to Best Friends for years and I FINALLY made my way down to Kanab! At first, it feels ackward, no cell phone or internet, but after 24 hours, I felt much more relaxed and soon fell in love with the quiet, peacefullness that comes with watching the sunset over the horse pasture. I stayed in a "cottage" on the property and it was so clean and relaxing. I loved this trip and will be back soon. If you love animals, you MUST add this as a place to visit!
