This small town of 10,000 or maybe less sits in the center of the southwest’s national parks and amazing geological scenery, with coral pink cliffs, sand dunes, volcanic craters, lava flows, deep canyons, and majestic mountains all close by. In fact the region used to be called “Little Hollywood” because so many films were made in the surrounding area.
Zion, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon National Parks are all nearby, with Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and Lake Powell also in close proximity. The Dixie National Forest is about 30 miles north and offers year-round recreation opportunities.
It used to be one of the most isolated towns in the country and perhaps that isolation is why Zane Gray lived in the town while writing his Riders of the Purple Sage in 1912.
Pet lover or not, make sure to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.
