Kalyazin Vacation Guide
Kalyazin is situated in the region of Tver, at the distance of 170 km north of Moscow by a P104 motorway – rather narrow road with moderate traffic – which passes through Sergiev Posad. In the mid 30s – during the Soviet industrialization era – Moscow as the growing industrial town required more energy. In 1935 the Soviet government took the decision to build two new hydropower plants in the higher part of Volga river stream which leaded to the relocation of some communities lying right in the area of future reservoirs. Kalyazin known from the 12th century, was one of those towns.
Today the reservoir of the Uglich hydropower plant (built – as many other biggest industrial plants of that period – with the ruthless usage of prisoners’ labour and put into service in 1940) hides the former buildings of Kalyazin-Troitsev (Trinity) monastery founded in the 15th century, which simply was blown up during the reservoir’s construction works.
