Kaldidalur, the thrill of 4x4 driving in Iceland! Oct 08, 2010
Kaldidalur (literally means "cold valley") is a highland offroad located at the boundary of the interior of iceland and lies in the highlands of the country.

kaldidalur is the shortest of the 3 highland roads in iceland of only around 40 kms, therefore nicknamed "the highland for beginners". A baby route compared to the other two: sprengisandur and kjölur which are both over than 200 kms.

the valley lies between the coast of west iceland (borgarnes) and the volcano glacier of ók and Þórisjökull and somewhere located inside it, is the shield volcano: skjaldbreiður. The road lies at around 700 meters at its highest.

the only possible way to traverse the highlands of iceland is through 4x4s. It is not recommendable to drive ordinary cars because the road is rocky, bumpy and sometimes sandy and if there's an accident or something happened regarding normal cars, the insurance wont pay for it, since ordinary cars are not allowed to drive inside the highlands and the interior. We hired 3 4x4s: 9 seater landrover defender, a russian made 4x4 which the lada niva and a 5 seater toyota land cruiser!

it is a thrill to drive in kaldidalur! Driving the ring road of iceland is a thing but driving offroad is another thing! The landscape of kaldidalur is mind boggling - you see rocks, rocks, rocks, rocks - then a river suddenly cuts through the rocks and then glaciers and massive packs of ice just looms in the horizon. It couldnt be the moon, because the moon although composed of rocks has no water. It couldnt be an arid desert because deserts have no ice, and its icy cold here - it is a landscape that you can only see in small parts of the world and fortunately, iceland has it.

unfortunately, it is very expensive to have an adventure and offroad driving in the highlands of iceland. You need to rent a 4x4 vehicle (with an experienced driver) sure - you can rent a normal car and travel here - but if something happens - as ive said the insurance wont pay for it - and it will cost you much much more than hiring a 4x4. Then there are tours - unfortunately - kaldidalur is a part of tour and it costs around 200 euros for a day.

the cheapest way to do this is by mountainbiking, but you gotta be really really fit to be able to do it.

iceland is very expensive, but the money spent here is worth a thousandfold of experience that is not forgetable.
