Trifels Castle Mar 03, 2013
This castle it is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Rhineland-Palatinate. It doesn't look very attractive but historically important. The first record of the castle was in 1081. Trifels Castle is situated visibly above the town of Annweiler on a triple split cliff and it takes 10 minutes to walk from the parking. It’s one of the older castles not in ruins and it has some interesting history. From 1125 until the end of the 13 th century the imperial insignia, crown, scepter and sword, the highest symbols of the Holy Roman Empire were kept in this castle. Also King Richard 1 of England (Richard the Lionheart) was imprisoned here between 1192 and 1194. In the mid-1600s, the castle was abandoned... The entrance fee is 3 euro.
