Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Sep 17, 2012
The church is located at Kurfürstendamm. It can a bit hard to spot the church since the tower isn’t visible from the street - it is protected by a new construction - possibly because of renovation or to protect the pedestrians from being hit by falling stones from the ruin.

The church was hit by bombs during World War II. It was pretty badly damaged but unlike the rest of Berlin it was decided not to renovate the church instead it has been kept as a memorial for the war. The original church is no longer used on a daily basis instead there is an exhibition with different plagues telling a bit of the history of the church and war. Next to the original church is a new church where the services are performed today on a regular basis.

This church was bombed almost to destruction by the Allies during the Second World War. In the 1960s it was rebuilt to an extremely controversial design, but the damaged tower was left standing. Under the tower is the Memorial Hall, which houses an exhibition of photographs and objects concerning the history of the church, its destruction and rebuilding. This all turns out to be more interesting than you might suppose, since in many respects it is the story not just of the church but of Berlin itself. Allow about 30 minutes to see all the exhibits. The Memorial Hall is not very large, and so can get quite crowded. Nevertheless, it is certainly worth a visit, and the sight of the tower, sometimes referred to as the 'broken tooth', is quite breathtaking.
