Eat your heart out, rain Jun 24, 2016
A light rain began splattering us early afternoon during our visit to Suomenlinna, so it seemed timely to duck indoors for some lunch. We were viewing Piper’s Park at the time and the adjoining Piper’s Café was just the ticket. I suspect their customers are pretty much 100% tourists, but even though prices were steep at this self-serve venue they were not gouging.

Laura and I both scored a hearty bowl of their fish soup, which hit the spot on a cool, drizzly day. A broad selection of pasties were set out and I went for the cheese & spinach, which was yummy. My only disappointment, and a minor one, was the 2.5€ charge for a cup of coffee. I am accustomed to unlimited refills when self-serve, but asked to be sure and was informed it would be an additional 1€ per cup. Well, the coffee was not great so an easy decision.

Service was friendly and it is a lovely spot. Best seating is on the porch, which affords pleasant views of the pond and park, though the bench seating inside is not awful (can be cramped with high customer volume, like when it is raining). In case you forgot you were visiting a tourist site, the walls are plastered with tons of souvenirs. Feel free to stock up on memories while enjoying your meal at this pleasant café.

Coffee a bit rich here, eh? Seeing as it was not great anyway, sensible to pass on a buck for another cup.

You're welcome Vance. ;) At least it's not common in Europe. :)

Funnily enough, apparently Finland has one of the highest consumption of coffee in the world.

I don't remember being in any country outside of North America where you get free refills of coffee, soft drinks etc. Though in Japan and some places in China, I got free tea even without asking for it...

Great coffee and delicious Fazer's muffins Jul 07, 2010
A unique place in the whole Helsinki. Café bar is located in a beautiful, historic building from the late nineteenth century on the island Suomenlinna. Cafe has been around since 1928 and is the oldest café on Suomenlinna. In addition to unique climate, cafeteria delights with delicious coffee, which can be enjoyed out on a sunny afternoon. Sure to try the cakes and biscuits served at Cafe Piper - I especially recommend strongly chocolate muffins branded branded Fazer! I warmly greet Café service - is extremely nice, likeable and open! While in Helsinki, necessarily you have to go there!
