♥ Kadayawan Festival: Understanding the Life of the Indigenous Peoples ♥ Oct 04, 2008
They say it's only when you have traveled South that you have actually completely understand what the Philippines is all about. And the best way to do that is through the city of Davao - the heart and soul of Mindanao.

The city is the island's melting pot - where different cultures and traditions meet and every August this diversity is celebrated by a one-of-a-kind festival: the KADAYAWAN festival.

The life and culture of the indigenous peoples have always been linked to the land. Since time immemorial, Davao has been the homeland of the Indigenous Peoples and land has become the core of their existence. If their land is lost, so is their culture and traditions. Thus, there is a need to defend the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands for them to continually live and practice their way of life- consulting the spirits, working with nature and sharing with others. This is the main reason of celebrating the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008. (from www.kadayawan.com)

This year's festival was one of the biggest, if not the grandest. Street dancing (Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan) started early in the morning and ended late at night. The following are the highlights of the festival:

Fashion and Floral Design Competition

Indigenous Food Fiesta and Food/Beverage Festival

Visual Arts Exhibits

♫♫♫ World Music Festival ♫♫♫

Search for the Kadayawan Gem

Mindanao Dance Showcases

Floral Float Parades and Agro-Industrial Trade Fairs

.... and lots and lots of fruits...♥

The atmosphere of the entire city is so festive. Although, there are on-going wars in some areas of the island, the festival was able to reassure the Filipino people that unity amidst diversity is very possible and can be sustainable.

For those who wants to experience Kadayawan every August, there are tour packages availabe:

1. Heritage Tour (P589/pax) ♥

Tour starts at the newly opened Museo Dabaw showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Davao’s ethnic communities. Also check HULAGWAY SA KALIWATAN, an indigenous Peoples Visual Arts Exhibit. Proceed to Rizal Park for Lumadnong Bantawan a performance showcases of dance, songs and other ceremonies fit for public performances of the 10 focused Davao tribes. Take a leisurely walk around People’s Park. Dine at the Ka’an Dawet and discover the many culinary delights of Davao.

2. Indak-Indak sa Dabaw (P998/pax)♥

The most awaited event during the Kadayawan Festival is a people’s celebration and merriment through choreographed and Theatrical street-dance narrative competition anchored on indigenous Tradition. Take a break from the revelry and experience Davao’s lush Wonders of nature at the Malagos Garden Resort and the Philippine Eagle Breeding Center. The tour ends at the Ka’an Dawet for a sumptuous Dinner.

3. Madayaw Dabaw - Pamulak Kadayawan (P450/pax) ♥

The grand finale of the Kadayawan Festival. Fruits and Flowers in season are the main features during the floral float parade competition. It’s also shop till you drop at the Lumadnong Gama where indigenous crafts and crops will be on sale attesting the tribal people’s productivity and age-old creativity. Although Kadayawan Festival 2008 had already been celebrated last August, there's always next year and well, it's good to plan as early as now. Do keep in mind that hotel reservations need to be booked at least a month earlier...
