Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan. It sits about 5000 feet above sea level in a dusty valley surrounded by the Hindu Kush. The city is actually bisected by a small mountain range, popularly known as TV mountain, which hovers over the downtown market area, and splits the city diagonally into two.

While many people will recall only Kabul's war-ravaged past, the bustling city of 3 million is home to such sites as Babur's Gardens (carefully restored to their former glory), the unique Bird Seller's street, and Kabul museum.

The security situation in the city is always something to watch carefully. But slowly the city is returning to normal, and visits are becoming possible. To visit Kabul, you can contact The Great Game Travel Company at www.greatgametravel.com.

Well Merry Christmas everyone,  I get to spend another holiday season in the third world, woo-hoo! I guess it's not too bad considering I wanted this job and I've already earned more than I made in 9 months in Iraq with the Military. The only thing that really sucks is I know the Taliban are stepping up attacks this winter and since it recently started snowing they've been able to get into the city. Were supposed to get hit 3 days ago but I guess they held off. Maybe they have a special...

Departing on our trip

It was Nov. 1, and we were finally leaving to go on our trip to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.  Our Uzbek visas took about three weeks to get since we had to have a travel agent request permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tashkent for the Uzbek embassy in Kabul to issue the tourist visas.  Uzbeks don't like Afghans, and the embassy there does not routinely issue tourist visas.  After that, with just one week to go before our trip, we had to get our Turkmen transit ...

Doing the old hippie trail in reverse, traversing from Nepal to see more of the roof of the world, visit exotic places as Bhutan, dwell in the lowlands of Bangladesh, seek the origin of Budhism in India and finally make my way out of the continent via Pakistan.

My work often takes me to the beautiful nation of Qatar, and many surrounding nations. Although I've made this journey many times, I'll combine my blog into one specific time period.
