Cheese market in Alkmaar Aug 06, 2010
The cheese market in Alkmaar is a very known event in the Netherlands. I, however, had not visited the market until today and found it quite interesting. Although I do not like cheese, the spectacle was nice to see.

At 10 o'clock the bells ring as a sign the market has opened. From then on, the cheese is being checked, tasted and sold. The cheeses are also weighed (in a special building called "De Waag") and brought to the trucks of the buyers on the other side of the square. At 12.30 the market has ended.

The cheese market is held every Friday in April to September at the "Waagplein" or "Waag square". The square is easy to reach, many signs point to the exact location. Furthermore, explanation is given in several languages and booklets are for sale for 2 euros with some more information about the market. Children are allowed to sit on the benches so they can see it clearly.

A tip: if you want to experience the whole market, do come in time to get a good spot. It is also possible to visit the market later in the morning: tourists will be less, but most cheeses will also be gone.

Alkmaar is the city of cheese. The tradition of the Cheesemarket started in 1593. The cheesemarket is a standard tourist attraction :) but still it's nice to go and see it sometime. You will find the Cheesemarket at the "Waagplein" on Friday's from 10.00 untill 12.00.

Only in the months from April to September and the specific dates vary sometimes so be sure to check before you go! It's a pretty sight because the market is totally filled with cheeses and you can see how the cheeses are being weighed and priced and being bought and sold. It's a very traditional thing.
