I'm Just a Bill Apr 16, 2013
Although unlikely this will be an annual affair, I wanted to share an event I participated in recently because the organization seems intent on sponsoring similar runs across the United States. Represent.US (url = http://represent.us/) is a campaign supporting passage of the American Anti-Corruption Law, an act which would overhaul campaign finance, impose strict lobbying and conflict of interest laws, and reign in secret political money. Saturday’s run was an opening volley in their crusade and they have an impressive Board of Advisors, including Jack Abramoff (the former lobbying kingpin who served time for violations, and has apparently seen the light) and Trevor Potter (a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, whom you might recall as the legal counsel to Stephen Colbert when he organized his SuperPAC last fall).

One of the real plusses about the event was that it cost nothing to enter and when we arrived at the starting line (Farragut Square), the first order of business was putting on a costume they provided to make us look like a $100 bill! There were several hundred entrants, and we were a pretty impressive wad of bills when the march began. The minus of the affair was that it had been billed as a 5K RUN, but the police motorcade was tooling along at a “march” pace and I doubt the route even made 2.5 miles (5K=3.1 miles). At the very beginning of the march my buddy John spotted some “fast bucks” abandoning the ranks and running ahead on the sidewalk, so we quickly joined them. It was great fun drawing attention from the tourists as we headed along K Street (notorious as the home of many lobbyist offices), then zig-zagging down 9th Street to Pennsylvania and on to Capitol Hill. I felt like a media darling with so many folks snapping my photograph.

Though we had to constantly stop for street crossings, our renegade group made it to the finish about a half hour ahead of the plodding mass (they even had a marching band walking with them). There were good times aplenty, especially when we learned Ben & Jerry’s supports the cause - they set up a table at the finish and handed out free ice cream to the participants. Then it was a few speakers, most notably one of the organizers who told how they wanted us to enter the Capitol building, but since the DC Police denied the request we presented the officers with a plaque for “keeping money out of Congress”!

A fun day and something to be aware if you notice Represent.US planning a venture in your area. Having traveled to a city to run a race two days before the Boston tragedy, I would also like express sadness and condolences to those affected by shameful and senseless violence.

I'm relieved you got the connection, Brian --- that was precisely what "I'm just a bill" was referencing...but evrybody else thought I was driving at some tie to the Mr. Bill Show!

Noble cause and well done! ((bowing)) When I saw the title "I'm just a Bill" I immediately thought of the Schoolhouse Rock piece from the 1970's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyeJ55o3El0) - clever title even though you're a bill of a different kind!
