As a married father of three daughters, who have traveled abroad with us and independently, I would offer that perspective. Athens seems to be a pretty safe city if you use the same discretion you should use elsewhere. People are very friendly and helpful. The metro is efficient, clean and safe- but it does not run 24 hours. Have a plan, a map and a written(local language included) name and address of where you want to go and especially where you are staying. A business card works great. In Greece, English will not be a major issue. If your activities and walking are in public access areas, with other people around, you should be fine. Have a great time, but not so good as to not be in control and you will be safe. While I am almost two meters tall and generally not bothered, I would not worry about my wife or daughters if they did the above. We loved Athens and will return to Greece in a few months for a several week stay. -Dave
