Jungfraujoch: the top of Europe Jun 20, 2012
Jungfraujoch will celebrate it's 100th anniversary this august 2012 and is the top or one of the top (depends on your perspective) tourist destination in switzerland. it is one of the greatest engineering marvels in the world and the birthplace of the aletsch glacier. located in the bernese alps at 3471 m or 11,388 ft asl is the highest train station in europe on the col between the mountains of mönch 4,107 m (13,474 ft) and the jungfrau 4,158 m (13,642 ft) but not only that - after constructing the highest train station, the swiss also built on the outcrop of the col the highest astronomical observatory in europe - the sphinx observatory at 3,571 meters or 11,716 ft for which you can have a view of the longest and thickest glacier in the european alps - the great aletsch glacier.

the train route or the name: jungfraubahn starts from kleine scheidegg - a mountain pass 2,061 m or 6,762 ft below the eiger, mönch and jungfrau mountains. the track has a distance of 9.3 km (5.8 mi) with three more stations: eigergletscher at 2,320 m (7,612 ft) which has a view of the eiger glacier between the mountains eiger and mönch, eigerwand (which has a view of the valley below at 2,864 m (9,396 ft) and eismeer at 3,158 m or 10,361 ft (which has a view of endless ice and glaciers at the back of the mountains eiger, mönch and jungfrau) - to which the two stations were constructed by blasting hard rocks and creating a tunnel inside the mountains.

at jungfraujoch - you will not be only treated of being in the highest railway station in europe - but amusements as well - ski and snowboard park even in high summer, dog sledding, ziplining, audio visual presentation how jungfraujoch was constructed, ice palace, a lift that would take you to the sphinx observatory, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, a mini bar on the glacier plateau and so many more endless possbibilities - you can even hike on the aletsch glacier until mönchsjochhütte (with good shoes please) - the highest mountain hut in switzerland that serves restaurant quality food and if you really want to go extreme - jungfraujoch is the base to climb the queen of the bernese alps - the jungfrau (the virgin).

on a clear and good weather - the sun is so strong here that it would immediately burn you skin - taking also the account of the sun reflecting through the ice and snow. so bring sunglasses and sun cream.

it may sound perfect for an adventure or family trip on high altitude because of its accesibility - but the tickets to jungfraujoch are insanely expensive - at 200 chf roundtrip plus the prices of the cafes/restaurants are not on the cheap side either but if you have the money to splurge - i really recommend going here because its not only educational, its also a once in a lifetime experience.

and best of all - it has wifi! lol

A journey into the clouds May 10, 2011
No trip to Switzerland would be complete without a trip up one of those beautiful peaks that belong to the Swiss Alps. I chose the Jungfraujoch as most travel guides and also people I spoke to recommended this one. I must say, I was surely not disappointed! Words cannot describe how magnificent that mountain is. Just to be surrounded by all that snow and to be that high up was amazing!

I must admit though, as much as the actual trip up to the mountain was the highlight, the journey there was a great added surprise which could have easily been the event all in itself. As you drive through the Alps, the scenery is so breathtaking that photo's simply don't do justice! The train ride up to the mountain really is something else altogether and of course you just have to drive to the quaint town of Interlaken.

Just as I kept thinking this is as beautiful as it gets, we turned another bend and the views only got better and better. Whether it be the Jungfraujoch or any of the other peaks in the Alps, its a definite must!!!

Take a tour, or do it by yourself but just don't rush and make sure you take it all in. Looking at the pictures afterwards is just not the same!!

Top Of Europe May 24, 2011
A pretty amazing place to go to and when its the highest mountain in europe it doesnt disappoint even for the money you pay. It takes about 2 hours to get up to the peak of the mountain by train but it does stop along the way to check out the sights. You might feel a little lightheaded from being up so high but that goes away. There are many of things to do up there including a ice palace, sled dogs or just throw snow balls at each other. If you head to Switzerland you have to come here take your time and soak it all up.

It might seem like a lot of money to pay for a train trip through a tunnel and the knowledge that you might not get any views but it is worth it.

The trains are comfortable and provide info films so you know what is going on and you get the opportunity to stop and see where you have been and where you are through out the journey.

Once at the top of Europe you have loads of options. Take a walk out onto the snow where you have the chance to walk round for a pint of tea at the hut (whose name I have forgotten), use the zip wire, slidding disks or just marvel at the views - if the weather is ok.

If the weather sucks then there is the ice palace - be careful anyone can slip over, I have the bruise on my bum to prove it. The sphinx also offfers awesome views and a blustery alternative to the snow.

There are plenty of restaurants and some shops for that all important retail therapy.

On the way back down if you are feeling adventurous you can get off the train at Eigerwand and follow the trail along the north face of the Eiger down to Alpiglen and catch the train the rest of the way back down.
