4th of July Fireworks Celebration (Downtown Juneau)

Today Keith was working and the person I had lined up on Couchsurfing for some hopeful sightseeing sorta just disappeared on me which was odd as we had been emailing back and forth a few times prior to my arrival.  Being the resourceful one I am, I checked out some more couchsurfing profiles and also sent some emails on Myspace.  I got back some good info and recommendations on both things to visit and places to eat.  The most popular recommendation for dinner was the Twisted F...

Juneau was breathtaking this evening, in more ways than one! The temp outside was 23F but felt way colder, so that's what I meant by breathtaking... walking to my car the cold air stung my throat. Freezing cold, but beautiful! It's hard to capture it with my camera, it doesn't take night pictures to well...maybe it's just me who can't do night pictures too well, who knows. But let me set the scene for you, then you can take a look at the few pictures I took. The fog was forming...

Juneau The Deal

So, I think I am liking this Trav buddy thing...but it is hard to reminisce about trips that were so long ago.  Therefore, I think I need to make a disclaimer that some of the facts in these journals may be a little overinflated or just pure fiction.  That's a defense mechanism of mine.  If I didn't do anything exciting, well...I just lie and say that I did. So on with the story... First thing I did in Juneau, Alaska was get into a bare knuckled fighting match with an aligato...

JU NEAU That?
posted by:
May 07, 2008 - May 26, 2008
was the punch line of a joke our morning guide, Ron told us on our way back from the Dog Sled Summer Camp. He was a funny, older man who seemed to love his job. I could see why, Juneau, a pretty, colorful city and the capital of Alaska is settled at the base of a mountain, conveniently called Mount Juneau. There is also an island; Douglas, across from Juneau. It is only accessible by aircraft or boat and has more vehicles than people! Did Jun neau that? haha Our morni...

Kayaking in SE Alaska
posted by:
Jun 11, 2003
I joined this guided tour due to the fact that I had never cold water kayaked. Bad mistake. I did not learn a thing about the aspects of cold water kayaking that could not have learned while simply kayaking myself. The best advantage of a guided tour is that it is all inclusive. They provide tents, food, and the kayak. So with that in mind I can honestly say it was worth the money. My Kayak partner, the kayak was a tandem, was a lawyer from Las Vegas. He was quite the character. He wore a Ke...

Dog Sledding
posted by:
Aug 20, 2007 - Aug 23, 2007
I knew that the ONLY thing I wanted to do on this cruise, if nothing else, was to go dog sledding.  It was very expensive, about $400, but my mom and I both thought, "When will we ever be in Alaska again and have an opportunity like this!?"  It was an early morning excursion and it was still very foggy; everyone around kept saying the helicopters don't fly in the fog because it's so dangerous and we were starting to get bummed out.  When our bus came to get us at the pier, we l...

Second Port: Juneau

Alaska's capital is accessible by either air or sea, not land.  We obviously arrived by water.  The ship's lifeboats doubled as ferries to the mainland.  Our day in the capital was spent on water and land.  The water part was whale-watching.  I was very excited about the possibility of seeing whales for the first time and we spotted about four orca.  Also, on this excursion we saw seals and bald eagles.  The land part of the day involved just wandering ...

Through the Inside Passage
posted by:
Jun 02, 2007 - Jun 13, 2007
This weekend we headed up to Alaska to cruise the Inside Passage. The trip started out well, with our hotel in Vancouver sharing a building with IHOP, making someone very happy. Our waitress Monica was charming, and made sure I didn't miss out on the final "drops of happiness" in the beer bottle. Friday morning we flew up to Prince Rupert, managing to hang on to our seats when they started kicking people off (the floods that cut Prince Rupert off by land means the plane had to fly with...

Helicopter to the icefield
posted by:
Sep 11, 2005 - Oct 04, 2005
Today Andrew and I are heading off on different tours. We had booked the same one but it was a landing on the icefields for 1 hour. I thought "why would I want to stand on an ice field for that long, so I cancelled mine and booked onto what I thought was just a flight over the icefield. I was happy with that. Andrew took the camera and I took the video recorder.  When I went to get on my bus I found out that we were landing for half an hour! The bus driver was great and the helicopter fl...

Arrival in Juneau
posted by:
Jul 09, 2008 - Jul 20, 2008
Today was incredible!!!!   Our first 'cruise' through a fjord, and it was wonderful.  We went with Adventure Bound Travel and Captain Steve, who was great.  The boat was 54 feet long or so with a back viewing deck and room on the bow as well. The cruise left from the Juneau port and along the coastline into Tracy Arm Fjord, which is basically a deep, water-filled, long valley that was carved out by a glacier (which is a 'river' of ice that grinds and crushes things as it ...
