We experienced that the 14th of July is the busiest week end of the year in Amsterdam because of summer holidays and the French National Day, which is a bank holiday.
That is what the woman we talked to at the Tourist Information told us when we looked desperate, remembering all our friends saying it was not a big deal to find a place to sleep in Amsterdam! All the hostels were full and there was no vacancies for a budget hotel near the center. Booking in advance is highly recommended, in particular if you are looking for a cheap accommodation!
