Julio's Barrio Edmonton Reviews
A Mexican Is Crying. Jul 09, 2011
A few years ago we used to love going here for their nachos and enchilada's and chasing them down with some Corona's. Lately, the food at this place has taken a horrible turn for the worst. Mexican food is known for its simplicity and common ingredients. Now their food seems to be prepackaged, otherwise it is horribly preprepared and rather bland. I would compare it to a bad version of taco bell with much higher prices.
At first I was surprised, but when you walk in you see why food is no longer a priority. It is a pub now, and the food is just a legal requirement. So with the significantly reduced emphasis on food they are increasing their alcohol sales.
Anyone who has been to a club knows that increased push on alcohol results in drunker patrons. Which brings me to my second major point about this place. We were in here a few weeks back and saw a fight break out right at the front door while we were waiting for a table. When we sat down another fight broke out a short distance away. Then when we thought it couldn't get worse a fight broke out beside us and our food and drinks were knocked over in the process.
At this point we asked for the bill for the drinks we finished. A bill arrived with the entire food and drink order. We spoke to the manager and he didn't care. He said it wasn't his fault, well it wasn't ours either and we put enough down to cover the drinks we had then walked out for the last time.
This was not a one of experience. We go here every few months thinking it will change but 4 out of 5 times there has been some form of altercation inside. 5 out of 5 times the food was horrible. The only reason we go back is because friends from out of town want to. Now we will refuse to go if asked again.

Julio's Barrio - as close to "Authentic Mexican" as you're going to get this far north!!
This is one of my favourite restaurants. There are two locations in Edmonton, but the best one is on Whyte Avenue; Edmonton's epicentre of everything hipster and arty. Not only that, there are great shops, independent movie theatres and hostels nearby!
Most menu items are probably best described as "Tex Mex" rather than actually Mexican, but they still taste fantastic! You can kick up the spice (or not) and have loads of meat - or go vegetarian if you prefer. Either way - come hungry! Servings are BIG.
The nachos are especially good if you're in that kind of mood (or heading out to the bars afterwards) and for dessert, the comida de monos (monkey food) is a wonderfully (although VERY sugary) little platter that's good to share.
They won't take reservations, but even if you show up when they're full you likely won't have to wait long to get to your enchiladas!
Julio's is a REALLY popular place in the city and in the summer time it can be hard to get a table. They even open up a patio onto the sidewalk! I think it's best to cool off with a strawberry marguerita, and they taste wonderfully virgin as well.
Hasta la vista, amigos~
