Fast food the Jamaican way Feb 13, 2008
Juici Patties is a chain fast food restaurant found throughout Jamaica so you'll find a shop in nearly every town on the island. It is Jamaica's version of McDonald's so to speak but is quintessentially Jamaican, thus making it far more unique. Patties are something like a Hot Pocket but so much better and with the exception of the Juici Patties chain, are often found home-made in restaurants and roadside stands everywhere on the island. Patties are one of Jamaica's specialties, like fried fish and bammy and salt fish & ackee. So, when in Jamaica, one must indulge like a Jamaican and one of the best ways to do that is to pick up a patty and coco bread with a 'juice' (as the locals call almost any drink) and enjoy!

Not until this latest trip to Jamaica did I discover the wonder of patties and coco bread. I had no idea what coco bread was until introduced to me by a local. I'd see it on the menu, but with no idea what purpose it served, ignored it. Coco bread is akin to a pita but thicker and more 'bready'. And conveniently, they bake them in the same shape as a patty so the trick is to split the coco bread in conveniently pre-perforated half, shove your patty inside, and have an extra-chunky snack. My favorite lunch became a cheese patty, which apparently actually also contains chicken, stuffed inside coco bread and chased down with a pineapple, ginger ale or champagne soda. Something about that crispy fried pocket of steamy meat and cheese surrounded by a chewy bread pocket just hits the spot! There is a variety of patties to choose from including vegetarian options filled with callaloo (something close to spinach). We hit Juici Patties in Lucea and Negril with the preference being the store in Negril although there is probably little difference between what's served. If you're looking for a very inexpensive lunch for around $200 JA for patty, coco bread and drink (approximately $3 US), this is a tasty treat you'll enjoy every time!

Juci patties are ok...TASTEE ARE MUCH MUCH BETTER, the problem is TASTEE has ignored the country side i guess they figured people did'nt have enough money or they were simply complacent, they have a kiosk at mobay airport overpriced there but good
